Titles Don’t Come Easy

Coming up with titles for my work is hard. I tend to overthink it. I don’t consider myself very good with words. Unless I am writing from a raw or emotional place, I really struggle with words.

Maybe that’s why I gravitated to the Abstract Expressionist style of painting. I can express myself – my emotions and many moods – through the layers of color, marks and texture. But even this can be a struggle. I work intuitively which involves letting go, not so easy for someone who tends to try to control their emotions, which I do.

For my upcoming residency (only 3 months away!) I really hope to be able to turn a corner with my art. In order to do my best work I need to prepare myself physically, mentally and emotionally.

It’s the work that needs to be done before I even pick up a paint brush – and it needs to start NOW. I want to get in better shape physically by attempting (key word!) to eat healthier. I need to get out in nature more, even if it’s just for walks around the block. I find that helps me emotionally.

Something else I find useful is reading books and articles related to my creative process. I found a great post on the website of artist Chris Zydel. The title of the post is “The Intuitive Painting Practice Paint-ifesto” and you can read it here.

There will be more on my journey over the next couple months but for now this is where I am at.

PS the painting is still “Untitled”. I have a few thoughts but for now, no decision. The piece is available for purchase. If you are interested contact me at sales@sgturnerart.com
