A milestone

They say the years with zeros on the end are the BIG x-Oh’s – I think the ones with the nines are! One more year until you enter the next decade of your life. Time to make that one big reach towards your dream!

Well I turned 59 this week.  Looking back I have to say I have had a great life overall. Yes, it’s been full of some deep dives but God has brought me through. I have the most loving husband any girl could ask for, and amazing daughters and grandkids too! I AM blessed!

I always set goals for myself, some immediate, others  are long term. I’ve always met them, and for the most part surpassed them each time. This year I have set two for my art career: 1) apply and attend an art residency program; 2) show my art in an out-of-state art show.  These are annual goals.

My overall goal has been to open a space which can serve both as a gallery and teaching space. I have had a few ones in other area towns and cities in the past but my real goal is to have one in the city I live in – Rome.

I’m not going to mince words here – ROME is a tough nut to crack! I have reached out into the community and it’s organizations to get involved and lend my talents but for whatever reason I am not well received. I’ve racked my brain over it for years (14!): Is it because I’m not from Rome; is it because I’m from New Hartford; is it because I am too aggressive; is it because I come off as pushy, bossy or a know-it-all?; what the hell is it? Does what I offer seem too good to be true? I know I am a LOT. My mind goes 100 mph and I sometimes seem crazy – hell, I am crazy, but in a good way!

Well thankfully last year when I reached out,  one woman accepted. She allowed me to show I meant what I said. I’ve been able to volunteer and use my talents to share my love of art with area children.  It’s been an easy ride! We have had a nice working relationship. She allowed me room to grow one of their programs and we’ve made great strides in building it – next year we are even adding on a new program to introduce young teens to sewing! So, a special shout out to Lisa Matte, Director at Jervis Public Library! <3

Back to my story…. (yeah I tend to take side trips, if you are new to this blog, buckle up! LOL)

This coming year, before July 17, 2019, I plan to open the small space here in Rome! Will it be successful? I don’t know, my only goal is to open it. I want to help other artists and introduce children to the arts – IN MY OWN WAY! It’s not about making money (shhh don’t tell my husband that!) it’s about giving back. Yes, I need to make enough to cover the bills and buy cool art supplies, but other than that, I have no great financial goals in mind. I just want to have fun and give to my community with what I can offer them. Me. Little ole me.

I’ll keep you posted.
