In her book, “The Artist’s Journey: Bold Strokes to Spark Creativity”, Nancy Hillis writes,
“ If you’re not throwing away some of your work, you’re not evolving as an artist.”
Happy to know, that as I was struggling in my studio this past week, I was REALLY just evolving. Lol
All jokes aside, I am really enjoying her book. As Nancy is a Stanford trained existential psychiatrist, I though it might be over my head a bit, or she’d lose me. But it’s an easy read. It holds my interest.
The book is about exploring a deeper self-expression and working through that inner criticism that we all come up against. I picked it up as part of my preparation for my journey to Newnan, Georgia and a stay at an upcoming art residency. The plan is that while I am there I will create a series of new paintings for an exhibit I’m titling “Layers of Lies”. It’s based on my inner critic and the lies I’ve told myself throughout my life – specifically, the opinions of myself that I’ve played in my head, over and over.
I will be sharing more about my journey in the weeks to come.
